If you’re struggling with Japanese knotweed on your property, you may be wondering what treatment method is best equipped to help rid your property of this problem plant.

Unfortunately, there is no simple one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The best course of action when treating Japanese knotweed depends on a number of factors including:

  1. Where the knotweed is located
  2. The extent of the infestation
  3. What the affected land will be used for post-treatment

Japanese Knotweed Control Methods

There are a range of different treatment plans for Japanese knotweed, the 3 primary treatments being:

  • Herbicide
  • Excavation and Removal
  • Excavation and Burial

So, which of these knotweed control methods are best?

The truth is, none of these treatment plans are necessarily better than the others. However, each treatment method is uniquely suited to different requirements.

Herbicide is the most common method for Japanese knotweed control for a number of reasons. For one, herbicide is by far the cheapest of the treatment options. In most instances, herbicide treatment will come strongly recommended by your knotweed removal professional. Herbicide treatment also offers minimal disruption during its application.

Excavation and removal treatments are usually only used in very specific situations, usually when removing knotweed from a building site where the affected ground will be built upon following treatment. As the name suggests, knotweed excavation and removal treatment consists of the knotweed being dug up and transported to an approved disposal site.

Knotweed excavation and burial is a more cost-effective alternative to excavation and removal, an is also a more sustainable method as is diverts unnecessary waste from the landfill. During this treatment process, knotweed is dug up, placed in weed-proof membrane, and buried again.
