Japanese Knotweed: What You Need to Know

Here are some key facts about Japanese knotweed:
  • The plant is native to East Asia. It was brought to Europe in the 19th century. Funnily enough, Japanese knotweed isn’t really a problem in Japan, but it has caused a lot of issues here in the UK.
  • The plant has broad green leaves and a bamboo-like stem. In summer, it grows clusters of small white flowers.
  • It’s capable of growing VERY quickly – up to 10cm per day during the summer months – and it can push its way through concrete and block pipes and disrupt underground cables.
  • It can be incredibly difficult to sell a house that is affected by Japanese knotweed as lenders often refuse mortgage applications for such properties.
  • Under UK law, it’s an offence to spread Japanese knotweed into the wild. If you’re found guilty of allowing the plant to spread – even by accident – you may be fined or even imprisoned.

How Total Weed Control Can Help

As Japanese knotweed is subject to strict environmental laws, it’s always best to call in an expert instead of attempting to get rid of the plant yourself.

  • Carry out an initial survey to confirm the presence of knotweed and an evaluation of the size and severity of the infestation.
  • Recommend a treatment plan that will ensure effective control of the knotweed infestation.
  • Efficiently and effectively remove the Japanese knotweed using either herbicides or excavation.
  • Properly dispose pf any waste in line with current regulations.
