Three-cornered garlic and wild garlic are often confused because both plants produce white flowers and have a garlicky smell. However, there are several easy ways to tell them apart.
If you're unsure which plant you're looking at, the videos below look at the defining characteristics of each species.
First, here's a closer look at three-cornered garlic (also known as three-cornered leek):
How to identify three-cornered garlic
- White flowers that droop downwards
- A distinctive green stripe running down each petal
- Narrow leaves with a triangular cross-section
- A three-cornered stem
Now compare that to wild garlic:
How to identify wild garlic
- White flowers that stand upright rather than drooping
- No green stripe on the petals
- Broad, oval-shaped leaves
- Leaves that are much wider and flatter than three-cornered garlic
Although the two plants can appear similar at first glance, these visual differences make identification much easier once you know what to look for.
