weed growing between paving slabs

When you've spent a lot of money having a stylish patio installed in your garden, the last thing you want is for it to be spoiled by weeds. Sadly, weeds have a way of appearing in the strangest of places & can often be found in the gaps between paving tiles.

When a seed is deposited in the space between your tiles, these warm, wet conditions can cause the seeds to germinate. Once you've got weeds growing between your paving slabs, it can be quite difficult to get rid of them. We're going to talk you through a few different solutions so you can learn how to stop weeds growing between paving slabs.

1. Remove the Weeds By Hand

Whilst this may seem like a time-consuming way to stop weeds from growing between your paving slabs, this method ensures that you aren't damaging the mortar between your tiles. To remove the weeds between your paving slabs in this way, we'd recommend investing in a good kneeling pad and some simple garden tools. This will help you prise the weeds out from between the paving slabs easily without damaging your knees.

Pulling the weeds up by hand will certainly tackle the problem on the surface, but it's not guaranteed that the whole plant will be removed. The roots, which grow deep underground, will more than likely be left behind, so you may need to follow up with a professional weed removal treatment. For that reason, removal by hand isn't the most effective method of stopping weeds growing between paving slabs.

2. Use a Pressure Washer

Some people like to use a pressure washer to deal with weeds growing between paving slabs. Again, this can help tackle the problem on the surface, but it's ineffective at removing the weeds below the surface.

If any weeds do lift out completely using this pressure washer method, you run the risk of the mortar between your slabs lifting and eventually causing your pavers to lift too!

If you use this method to stop weeds growing between your paving slabs on a semi-regular basis, you will more than likely damage your patio - which is why it's much more effective to stop weeds from growing between your paving slabs with an effective herbicide, rather than using a pressure washer.

3. Invest in Professional Weed Treatment

If you're looking for the most effective way to stop weeds growing between paving slabs, we'd highly recommend choosing a professional weed treatment.

Unlike the manual methods outlined above, professional weed removal uses herbicides that will kill the weeds at the root. This means that one or two applications per year will not only kill the existing weeds between your paving slabs, but will also prevent new weeds from growing through in the future.

Here at Taylor Total Weed Control, we treat a wide range of garden weeds using specialist herbicides that aren't available in the supermarket. These herbicides are great for stopping weeds growing between paving slabs and are far less likely to damage your patio in the process. Find out more below.
