Japanese Knotweed: What You Need to Know

If you’re unfamiliar with Japanese knotweed, here are some key facts:
  • The plant is native to East Asia. It was brought to Europe in the 19th century. Funnily enough, Japanese knotweed isn’t really a problem in Japan, but it has caused a lot of issues here in the UK.

  • The plant has broad green leaves and a bamboo-like stem. In summer, it grows clusters of small white flowers.

  • It’s capable of growing VERY quickly – up to 10cm per day during the summer months – and it can push its way through small cracks in brickwork and concrete.

  • Japanese knotweed has a deleterious effect on property value. Selling a house that’s affected by Japanese knotweed can be very difficult because lenders often refuse mortgage applications for such properties.

  • You should not attempt Japanese knotweed removal yourself unless you know exactly what you’re doing. Leave behind even a small fragment of the plant’s rhizome root system, and it will grow back. (This is a big part of how the plant became such a big problem in Worcester and the surrounding area.)

  • Under UK law, it’s an offence to spread Japanese knotweed into the wild. If you’re found guilty of allowing the plant to spread – even by accident – you may be fined or even imprisoned.
